This is a few months old, but I just found it again. Ironically, this girl is neither particularly rich and spoiled nor particularly rude IRL. I’m sure it was meant as a joke, but still...Jesus.

I dunno. My father in law teaches elementary school, he makes considerably more than I do, he gets to work later, comes home earlier, gets 3 months a year off, plus sick days, a pension and retirement benefits. Seems pretty sweet to me.

It’s kinda sad. Not that your friend would say that, but that it’s true. We don’t pay our teachers enough.

Paired with that, I think a lot of our teachers aren’t trained well enough either. I had some great teachers, and I had some that I couldn’t believe were allowed to have contact with children.

That 3 month vacation seems so sweet. And although they do get paid less, they get great benefits, a mountain of sick days (subs are always around), and a pension.
The friend maybe doesn’t understand that the material goods you own does not necessarily reflect how much money you earn.
A high priced, depreciating good like a car isn’t even a wise purchase to spend 20% of your yearly income on, yet many people spend 100% and over for their car.

I’m well aware. Both things are sad.
Even if I may not say it, I’m guilty of similar stuff. For example, when I learned one of my history teachers had an X3, I was briefly surprised.

And some that they just keep around.

My school is a mixed bag when it comes to teacher cars. There’s one end of the spectrum with an RS5 Convertible, new 7-series, and an XTS Platinum. Then there’s the other with Cobalts, Civics, and old Chrysler/Dodge vans.

Mine really isn’t. They don’t drive crapcans, but most of them drive Fords an Hondas made within the last ten years. Just nondescript cars. Still, pay the damn teachers more.
Sad when you consider that we have one of the wealthiest schools with some of the most overfunded programs and facilities in the state. Above chick doesn’t even go to my school.

I once had a teacher that was not completely fluent in English. He was a very highly educated person, but couldn't keep up with proper English.

One of my math teachers had a C6 convertible with a stick. Her husband had money so she was working at public school as kind of a charity (and because she liked it). Since she didn’t need the job she had nothing to loose by being strict and unapologetic about her teaching methods. Best results because she wasn’t affraid. Same thing goes for a US history teacher at my school. He owned several Tobacco farms and was loaded. He taught US history because he liked it but all of his classes hated him and he made tons of students cry. His test scores are the best though so they keep him around. He also drives a crappy TJ wrangler with no windows year round but apparently has a collection of exotics.
What we need to do with Education is confusing. If anything we need to find a way to separate the good teachers from the bad (that isn’t standardized testing) and where to find more money to give them.

I agree with you. But people don’t stick around in teaching for the money, so it’s not like these people have anywhere better to go.

I like what you have said.

I live in a very wealthy district. The wealthiest teacher has a new blue M6. Another has an ml63 amg. Gym teachers have newer trucks (15 f150, 14 ram). The principal occasionally takes his Ferrari 430 to school, otherwise it’s his XTS.
The students cars are even more amazing
You drive through the parking lot thinking your at a DC private school
(Disclaimer: please don’t think i’m bragging. Please don’t think I’m bragging because I said “please don’t think I’m bragging”. I hate going to school with spoiled brats. Sucks more than you think)

My next-door neighbor is a former teacher, now a member of the school board. Same deal, her husband is an investor and used to own a bunch of Quiznos, among other things. She drives an ML-Class, and they spend thousands of dollars a year on their landscaping alone, but she loves teaching.

It’s not that extreme here, but my physics teacher has a brand new F150, my math teacher has an Edge Limited that looks like a Storm Trooper Helmet, some of the teachers have Jags or BMWs, the vice principal has a new CTS, and the pricipal? Well, she’s a member of the same family as our governor. The family that owns the Chicago Cubs. And yes, the students (or their parents, more often) have some very nice cars.

Really? The ones here in Chicago averaged almost 80k before their last strike for an 18% raise. And we have 50% graduation rates...

It’s good that she attributes what you drive to income status, thinks having a nice car is important, and looks down on one of the most important and unappreciated professions. Ladies and gentleman, your future Americans

Paid less than what? The person in question makes double the median pay in my state, for what essentially amounts to day care. Maybe the new teachers don’t have it as nice but it doesn’t mean that all teachers are underpaid.

I wouldn’t knock what teachers do because I know that they’re under a lot of stress and a day with a room full of kids is very tiring. For the money, the amount of stress and long days is not as good of a return as other industries/occupations.

My wife is a teacher and when my wife upgraded from a PT Cruiser to her 2011 Synergy Green Camaro, you would not believe the talk. She is now proclaimed by students to have the nicest car of all the teachers (unfortunately more true than it should be). The rest of the teachers drive ancient explorers and dodge/Chrysler minivans. I mean one of the teachers even drives a Mystique that he playfully calls the Mistake.
Her school doesn’t pay the teachers well at all and blame it on the enrollment count (which is partially true) but another local school with lower enrollment pays their teachers at least 6-8k more a year. I think their fund allocation needs to be revisited as they have one of the nicest football fields in the area and just started giving all the students an iPad for daily use a couple years ago. Madness I tell you.
At one of the graduation parties we went to yesterday, I overheard one of the students ask how my wife got such a nice car as a teacher....I was speechless, then another student spoke up and said “her husband”. To be honest I was a little pissed.
/rant (sorry)

Funny. The ones in North Carolina haven’t gotten a raise in 6 years and average around 46k. They can’t strike because they can’t have a union. We have an 82.5% graduation rate which isn’t bad so the state government won’t do anything.

Good. Senna help any one who gets into teaching for the money.

So in other words, half of the teachers out there have a nicer car than your friend’s. Aw, too bad! If it makes her feel any better, her car is probably nicer than the cars owned by 100% of me.
